About Additive Biomedical Solutions

Additive Biomedical Solutions provides unique capabilities in 3D-printing to the life sciences and medical device industries. These industries face challenges related to process and equipment qualification and to the final product’s sterility, biocompatibility, and degradation characteristics. Additive Biomedical Solutions provides the technical depth and rigor appropriate for products that will be physically interfacing with cells, tissue, and blood.

Some of the business is project-based, engaging with clients to solve their specific problems. In one project, a medical device start-up was printing an implantable device for clinical trials using a custom polymer. The client had concerns about the yield, reproducibility, and scalability of the process, as the printer used was no longer supported by the manufacturer. Additive Biomedical Solutions developed a complete pipeline of equipment and protocols for material qualification to printing to post-processing. Process intensification allowed the capital outlay on printers to be reduced to less than half of the client’s initial projections.

Our mission is to leverage the progress made in 3D-printing technologies, largely driven by the dental industry, in the biomedical space. To this end we develop products for general use in laboratory and R&D environments. This includes aftermarket printer accessories to enable sterile printing, printing of small volumes, and printing of volatile materials. We also engage with the academic community and seek collaborative grant opportunities for new applications in 3D printing. Examples of current grant agency interests are high-efficiency gas exchangers for extracorporeal life support and approaches for printing and seeding whole-organ scaffolds.
